Texas Instruments Unveils OMAP4 Chip

Last year at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain, Texas Instruments unveiled its OMAP3 chip, which supports up to 720p high-resolution playback and a handful of other robust mobile processing enhancements. Fast forward 12 months, and the Samsung OmniaHD (i8910) features this 720p capability, plus Nokia has announced that its next Internet Tablet will use the OMAP3 chipset. This year, Texas Instruments keeps manufacturers on their toes with the OMAP4 chipset.

The OMAP4 chipset boasts support for 1080p recording and playback, up to 20 megapixel camera modules (do these even exist yet?), and improved battery life, with up to 7 days of continuous music playback, depending on the battery capacity. The OMAP4 chipset is based on a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 chip, and you’ll also find a multimedia engine based on the C64x DSP, and a POWERDVR SGX540, for graphics. Not too shabby, really. TI is claiming this new OMAP4 will support Symbian, so it’s just a matter of waiting to see if/when Nokia or any other S60 licensee is going to bust this out.
